What are Allies?

During the event of a war, many countries will call upon what are known as "allies" to help them defeat their enemy. Generally allies have the following qualities:

  • Close friendship/bond
  • Common interest
  • Mutual respect

There are many reasons your country may want to have allies:

  • Strategic purposes
  • Less likely to be warred upon
  • Higher chance of survivability.

Allies can also cause your nation problems you may not have been involved in had you chosen not to ally:

  • Higher risk of being involved in a large conflict
  • Higher need for communication/activity
  • Force your nation to attack or defend when you don't want to or have the resources to

For these resons it is important that when you are seeking allies, before you finalize your relation, be aware of that country's attitude to others, world standing, general persona, and commitment.

Levels of Allies

Once a relationship has been agreed upon by two or more nations, they generally tend to show their alliance in the form of a treaty. The following is a list of the most common treaties in order of smallest to largest military commitment levels:

  • ToA (Treaty of Amity)
    • A treaty of amity usually recognizes the resolution of a past conflict or tension and the nations who sign this pact agree to move on from that conflict of interests/military/tension for a brighter tomorrow
  • ToF (Treaty of Friendship)
    • In this treaty the nations acknowledge a growing sense of familiarity and are making the first steps to a more substantial treaty in the future pending each's actions.
  • PIAT (Peace, Intelligence, Aid, Treaty)
    • This is one of the most basic levels of a military treaty. The nations who sign this pact agree to share money, intelligence, and not attack each other.
  • Protectorate
    • Generally a larger nation agrees to protect a very small nation looking for protection from raiding nations in order to get started. Generally in City Empires, it is a good idea to have a protectorate if you are starting a new nation with small numbers to prevent loss of money and property. Protectors usually offer helpful hints long with their military protection
  • ODP (Optional Defense Pact)
    • Should one of the signatories of this pact come under aggressive military actions from an outside third party, the other signatory may come to the defense of the other, however it is not required, yet encouraged.
  • MDP (Mutual Defense Pact)
    • The signatories of this pact agree to come to each other's aid should one of them come under aggressive military pressure.
  • MDoAP (Mutual Defense Optional Aggression Pact)
    • The countries who sign this treaty state they will aid in the defense of each other in the face of aggression, and have the option of participating in an aggressive war should one of the signatories start an aggressive war, however this is not required.
  • MDAP (Mutual Defense and Aggression Pact)
    • Signatories will aid in the defense of each other and participate in any aggressive action another signatory should start.

Declaring Official Alliances

To declare an official alliance between two nations, one of the signatories will generally create a post in the official City Empires forums announcing the momentous collaboration. As described in the Capital City section, a capital city can declare three official allies in game. If a country has more official allies, they will usually all be listed on the country's wikipedia page. Some nations do not have a wikipedia page so at times it may be best to check the official forums of the nation in question. If the nation does not have a forum, it would be best to contact the nation's leader.
